Le titre Capture-Recapture renvoie à une méthode fréquemment utilisée en écologie, qui consiste à capturer, marquer, relâcher, puis recapturer systématiquement une partie d’une population animale pour en estimer la taille ou y suivre la progression de maladies. Dans la vidéo, la bibliothèque de la station de biologie de l'Université de Montréal forme un écran pour le documentaire L’Extrême-Nord canadien, produit en 1959 par la Division scientifique de l’Office national du film du Canada. S’ouvre un espace composite où le territoire et les animaux nordiques sont simultanément capturés par les caméras de l’ONF et les rapports gouvernementaux de la bibliothèque. Par cette recapture s’éclaire un monitorage du territoire où promotion médiatique et manœuvres scientifiques sont côte à côte déployées.

The title Capture-Recapture refers to a method frequently used in ecology, which consists of systematically capturing, marking, releasing and then recapturing part of an animal population to estimate its size or monitor the progress of a disease. In the video, the library of the Université de Montréal’s Biology Station form a screen for the 16mm documentary High Arctic: Life on the Land, produced in 1959 by the Scientific Division of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). A composite space opens up, where the territory and northern animals are simultaneously captured by the NFB’s cameras and the library’s State reports. This recapture sheds light on the monitoring of the land where media promotion and scientific maneuvers are deployed side by side.
