À l’extrémité nord-ouest de la ville de Tàrrega, les maisons font peu à peu place aux cyprès et aux agaves géants du parc de Sant-Eloi. Sur ce qui fut jadis un mont chauve, les arbres et les oiseaux apparaissent au détour des volées de marches. Pourtant, l’aridité demeure vive sous le soleil infatigable. Ici, un monceau de terre est pelleté ponctuellement, un arbre planté avec enthousiasme, tandis que des rigoles de sueurs coulent sous les bas de nylon et les habits propres.
Développé lors d’une résidence à l’Arxiu comarcal de l’Urgell (Archives locales d’Urgell, Catalogne) à l’été 2019, Verdejar interroge les motifs politiques, hygiénistes et écologiques derrière la construction du parc de Sant Eloi, situé à Tàrrega, en Catalogne. L’essai vidéographique Verdejar propose une déambulation dans le parc actuel. Sa bande sonore fut réalisée en collaboration avec des habitant∙es de la ville, qui récitent en chœur des discours, des entrevues radiophoniques, des poèmes, des chansons et autres extraits de correspondance issus du fonds d’archives du parc. Accompagnant la vidéo, une publication et une installation – basées sur une collection d’images et de textes d’archives – racontent le récit fragmenté de la création et de l’évolution du parc à travers les années.

As one reaches the north-west end of Tàrrega, houses give way to the cypresses and giant agaves of the park of Sant Eloi. On what was once a bald mountain, trees and birds unravel beneath flights of stairs. Yet, aridness can still be felt under the tireless sun. There, dirt is shoveled punctually, a tree gets planted enthusiastically, while small rivers of sweat run under shiny nylons and clean suits.
From ecologist and hygienic goals, to the emulation of patriotic feelings, and the embellishment of the city, diverse beliefs were at the core of the creation, in Tàrrega, of the park of Sant Eloi in the first decades of the twentieth century. The video essay Verdejar proposes a dreamlike stroll through the park in its present condition. Its soundtrack was made in collaboration with inhabitants of Tàrrega, who recite, in chorus, various speeches, radio interviews, poems, songs and excerpts of correspondence from the archives of the park. Alongside the video, a publication and an installation —based on a collection of archival images and texts— tell the fragmented story of the creation and evolution of the park throughout the years.
